Losing My Dad

My dad died unexpectedly on May 6 and I've struggled with that mightily. My dad ... he was somethin' else ... he drove me CRAZY almost all the time. A Life Divided

My life is divided into two time frames - the life I had before my nephew died and the life I have now, after he's gone. His death completely changed me - I'm not sure for better or worse, but it changed me. I know that one thing it did do for certain is make me acutely aware of how quickly life can change; and it made me realize how little I'd been appreciating the life I'd been afforded before his death. I was the woman who never really wanted children until I met my husband. My roommate my freshman year in college would want to go to the park down the street from our dorm and watch the children play on the playground equipment - just because she loved hearing their giggles, she loved seeing them running and enjoying themselves. I couldn't imagine a worse way to spend my free time in college. Of course, her career path completely suits her now - a NICU flight nurse. Once I met my husband I couldn't wait to breed. An Open Letter to My Children

Today, on the prick of noon, Donald J. Trump was inaugurated as the 45th President of the United States. And I have struggled mightily with this idea since election results were finalized. In the back of my mind I have continued to have hope that something, someone, would come forward and be the voice of reason and keep the Electoral College's decision from becoming reality. For Andrew's 12th birthday (11/10), he asked for a Hillary Clinton win on Election Day (11/8). That was one of my proudest moments as a parent. But in the meantime, I've been working to ensure my children understand not only the importance of what's going on around us right now, but the notion that it's important to respect the Office of the President.
